20 YEARS OF "LOVE" BETWEEN RYANAIR AND MILAN BERGAMO AIRPORT

Ryanair's twenty-year collaboration with SACBO and Milan Bergamo Airport began on February 14, 2002. The connections were opened by the flight arriving from Frankfurt Hahn, on board which the wedding between Anja Schmitz and Thomas Pluta from the town of Andernach was celebrated.

In April of the same year Ryanair opened the route with London Stansted. In April 2002 Ryanair opened the route from Bergamo to London Stansted. In 2003, one year after the inaugural flight, the CEO of Ryanair, Michael O'Leary, inaugurated the base of the Irish carrier in Bergamo, with the positioning of 3 aircraft and reaching the quota of 1.3 million passengers in just twelve months. In these 20 years, Ryanair has invested heavily in its presence and operations in Milan Bergamo, increasing both the number of based aircraft and international / domestic routes, strengthening Bergamo's role as Ryanair's main Italian base.

From the 34 million passengers transported to and from Milan Bergamo airport in the first ten years of operation, Ryanair reached a total of 110 million passengers at the end of 2019. After the parenthesis imposed by the peak of the pandemic, the Irish airline led the resumption of air transport by sending the first of its new “Green” B737-8200 Gamechanger aircraft to Bergamo in July 2021. There are 11 Gamechangers out of the 20 total aircraft currently based in Bergamo, reducing Ryanair's fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and noise emissions in Bergamo.

This twentieth year of marriage between Ryanair and Bergamo promises to be the best ever for Bergamo, with Ryanair's 109 summer routes from Milan Bergamo airport, which will welcome even more passengers in 2022 than in the pre-Covid 2019 period.
