Il Caravaggio International Airport
The Bergamo Orio al Serio airport , also known by the names " Il Caravaggio International Airport ”(Official) and“ Milan Bergamo Airport ”(commercial), is
main airport of Bergamo, the Lombard capital 50 km from the center of
Milan.
The airport is located in the municipality of Orio al Serio and occupies
portions of the municipalities of Seriate and Grassobbio.
Together with the airports of Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate form
the Milan airport system (SEA, Società Esercizi Aeroportuali),
the second in Italy after the Roman one.
The airport, the third Italian in terms of number of passengers , is used
mainly from low-cost airlines: in fact it is at the airport
present the hangar of Ryanair , one of the most well-known airlines in
low cost based in Dublin.

The history of the Bergamo airport
Born in 1937 for military purposes, in 1970 he became
civil airport and two years later the first flight took off
direct to Rome Ciampino, operated by the company Itavia e
inaugurated with the presence of various political authorities. At the end
from the eighties,
SEA entered the share capital of SACBO (Società per
Bergamo Civil Airport).
With the arrival of Ryanair in 2003 , the airport began to grow exponentially
quickly becoming the
Italian airport par excellence for low-cost flights . In the
December 2009 the commercial area of the terminal was
expanded with new services, shops and refreshment points for
improve the waiting of travelers. Ten years later it was
also expanded the
area dedicated to non-Schengen flights .
On the occasion of the
refurbishment of the Milan airport runway
Linate , in August 2002 and from July to October 2019, the airport of
Bergamo
welcomed - in addition to ordinary traffic - part of the flights in
program at Linate , confirming itself as the leading airport in Italy knowing how to manage
passenger traffic beautifully.
